It’s-a me, Mario!
And don’t-a forget about Luigi!
Oh my gosh, you guys. I watched the Mario movie and had such a fun time. I’m posting this weeks after watching it, but all of this was written on the day I watched it (confusing, I know lol)
What a great birthday present though! Rarely does something come out on my birthday. I think the last time that happened, it was an anime series I really wanted to watch. And that was probably a few years ago now.
So I’m glad it was able to happen again! I took the day off from work so I could watch it 😅 But to be fair, my vacation cap was approaching and timing just happened to line up for the week that I needed to take off. So why not take my birthday off? Seemed like the most logical answer to me.
But, boy, what a ride this movie was lol I watched all the available trailers and clips that were released, and nothing could’ve prepared me for what I watched today. For this post, I’ll try to be as spoiler-free as I can, but hopefully, by the time this post comes out, most of the world would’ve already seen it.
Now without further ado, time to get started. Let’s-a go!
Update 10/2/24: Added a “Read More” line.

The Super Mario Bros Movie
OVERALL THOUGHTS
I know I usually have some kind of preface before we jump into each segment, but honestly, I said all I needed to up top lol So here we go!
First, let’s just say that this movie gets a solid 7 or 8 out of 10 from me. If you went into the movie expecting Mario, then you won’t be disappointed. The movie itself was charming, but I wish they put a bit more effort into the plot (it was pretty bare-bones). The action scenes and music were great though! Easily a 10/10. But the actual story? Could’ve been stronger. I suppose this movie also suffered from the “game turned movie” syndrome of stuffing it with as many notable Mario references as possible before the movie ended.
Despite all that, I walked out of that theatre happy and thoroughly entertained. But I think calling it a Mario Bros. movie is a bit misleading since Luigi doesn’t play a super huge part (you don’t really see much of him at all, which was a major bummer). It was a Mario movie, and that’s okay. They did my best boi Luigi justice at the end anyway, so I’m not even mad that he didn’t get a lot of screen time.
Also, I’d somehow forgotten that it was spring break for most kids. Thankfully, the couple of kids that were in the theatre with me were slightly older (but still in elementary school, I think), so the lack of children’s noise was a big plus. I also went to see this by myself, which I like to do from time to time. I sat in the very back, smack dab in the middle of the room. My theatre is also fairly small, so there weren’t too many people in there to start with.
I was trying to avoid it, but we can’t talk about the Mario movie without talking about the voice cast. Honestly, Chris Pratt as Mario wasn’t that bad. I think there were parts that everyone did well on. Characterization was on point, they voiced their lines well, etc. However, there were certain parts that threw me for a loop considering they made Peach have spunk and attitude. The reason why her characterization is so different from the games makes sense within the movie, so I actually enjoyed it. ALSO ALSO. They gave DK speaking lines, which threw me off a lot since he never speaks in the series. Well… technically, they gave a lot of creatures speaking lines who normally don’t have speaking lines, but whatever lol IT’S FINE. THEM HAVING SPEAKING LINES IS FINE. The voices weren’t even that bad. I’m not complaining, I promise lol
Alright, so two more things before I move on to my closing remarks. First, let’s talk about Mario and Luigi’s relationship with each other.
I. LOVED. THEM. ALL. ;~;
I thought their interactions with each other were great. There were so many times I had to cover my mouth so I could “Awwwwww” in my head 😂 I love all things familial, so these scenes really shot me through the heart haha Some scenes were just so damn cute. One scene in particular had me almost screaming out loud from it being added to the movie, but I won’t go into detail about it since nowhere online said they were gonna be making a cameo as well. And don’t worry, I didn’t scream, I just covered my face so I could “Awwwwww” loudly in my head LOL
Now, let’s go back to the music, shall we? The music was FANTASTIC. They were just cool variations or medleys of the original Mario music, but still. They were so good. I was bopping to the music in my seat. I don’t know if they’ll ever sell the soundtrack for this movie, but if they do, you bet your ass I’ll be the first in line.
Okay, so I lied about two more things. Maybe just… one more thing to mention because I will never get that scene out of my head lol
Despite Luigi not doing anything for basically the entire movie besides his parts at the beginning of the movie… *heavy sigh* Look. I know that this movie was really a Mario movie and once the brothers went through that pipe, Luigi was literally stuck in a cage for most of his screen time.
HOWEVER.
They did my boy so good at the end. HE DESERVED EVERY BIT OF THAT SCREEN TIME. ;~; God, I love Luigi so damn much. He deserves only the best.
CLOSING REMARKS
I was honestly trying to figure out what to write for my closing remarks, but I can’t think of anything that I haven’t already talked about.
Anyway, go watch the movie. That’s my closing remark LOL

And that’s a wrap! If you couldn’t tell from this super long post, I enjoyed the Mario movie lol Since writing this post, I’ve preordered the DVD, which also comes with the soundtrack hehe I usually don’t buy DVDs, but I guess this will be another exception 😅 I want to be able to pause or rewatch scenes!
Until next time! Bye bye~
